Ed is a marine biologist and environmental scientist who has successfully delivered complex projects for governments, financial institutions, NGOs and investors. With experience gained in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, Ed’s expertise lies in bringing together concepts, data and people to deliver tangible outcomes aimed at supporting the transition to sustainable development and use of our seas.
Ed’s career started in 2001 gathering and analysing data on and knowledge from fishers, coastal communities, maritime industries and the supporting ecological systems. This led to Ed’s involvement in coastal zone management and marine spatial planning, where he has been called on to work with coastal communities, multinational companies and regulators to design and implement co-existence strategies and activities, often in areas where marine resources are vital to food security, livelihoods and coastal economies. Ed’s practical experience with co-existence ranges from data collection and analysis for environmental impact assessments, design and negotiation of compensation packages, through to the delivery of co-existence plans, monitoring and validation.
Ed has also long been involved in efforts to enable sustainable fisheries through effective monitoring and management, including measures to tackle illegal and unregulated fishing. This experience ranges from delivering practical fisheries improvement plans for fisheries seeking sustainability certification, to advising the World Bank on opportunities and challenges for developing national fisheries and fishery value chains, to working with marine regulators to map the relationships between activities and desired outcomes. Ed’s approach is to work with stakeholders, from policy makers through to individual fishers to generate evidenced and transparent information that supports better decision-making.
Ed’s PhD investigated the challenges of assessing the cumulative impacts of human activities on marine environments with the aim of identifying opportunities to deliver fit-for-purpose cumulative effects assessments (CEAs). The research focused on the expansion of marine renewable energy development in UK waters and applied social-ecological systems theory and environmental change principles to develop a framework for cumulative assessments designed to promote coherence between strategic and project scale assessments.
